Since I am getting so tired of waiting for SoS I am going to draw a few connections between the JS and HP series.

Both Jennifer and Harry had no idea what they were until they eventually got to know

Before someone told them what they are, there was a few sign. Jennifer’s involved butterflies and oranges, Harry’s Snakes and letters.

They both go to some kind of "special school" to learn their stuff.

Both are special within their race. Jennifer is a furance; Harry got a small scar that he hides under his hair.

Both had a teacher person that died. Jennifer’s is Crawford, Harry’s is Dumbledore.

In JS the dragons wants to remain hidden. in HP, the wizards wants to remain hidden.

Both survive even if they die. Most likely due to the fact that they are main characters.

I will update this again later. Please keep them coming! Smile

Well I would say that Jennifer Scales is a wounderful book compared to Harry Potter. 1. Becasue not all the masses started to read it. 2. It involves people that can change into mythical creatures and/or beat the snot out of anything else. 3. It has a modern day setting and still continues to grow with the modern day setting of our world.
Now I am not saying you can't find this kinda stuff in the Harry Potter books, it is just that it is seen more in here than in there.

Well, I will not say that Harry Potter is bad, but in my opinion, it has one major problem. No story twists. I mean, it took him SEVEN books to defeat one single wizard. All Jennifer needed was a sword, and she did it the first book. The Harry Potter series begun to feel a bit shallow after a while.... I really hope Jennifer scales will not go that way.

Actually I agree. New villains tend to help the story a lot. I like plot twists. I would also say this about harry Potter: It is stretching out how the charater grows through his battles one book at a time.

Actually, you've stumbled on one of the wonders of storytelling: The Hero's Journey.

It's something that has been used over and over and over and over (well, you get the idea) again since the dawn of mythology. It involves all of those things that you've pointed out (minus the trying to hide bit, that just comes with being something so different and explaining why no one's noticed it).

Most writers tend to use it because it's a sequence of events that we know and love, something familiar that sets us at ease because we know it on a subconscious level. A lot of writers use it and don't realize that they just went step by step through a formula, just because their story formed around things that they knew and were familiar with.

So yeah, Harry Potter and Jennifer Scales have a lot in common, but I guarantee that you see that because Harry Potter just happens to be a big thing. I could draw the same tangents to a lot of other books that I've read, most of them have very little in common with either book, it just depends on how you analyze it.

Which brings me to my last point. I know English teachers think it's fun, but there's no need to do an in-depth autopsy on a book to prove a point. Kthxbai.

Yeah I was never that good in writing or english class so story telling is something that I have never been good at. I have the ideas but no story telling powers what so ever. Hence why I haven't put any new parts to my story up yet...
